Substitution

If a formula is given and the values of all but one of the variables in the formula are known, the value of the remaining variable can be evaluated by substituting the known values.

Example 45

The adult dose, A, of a certain drug is 0.8 grams. If the adult dose, the child dose, C, and the child's age, n, in years is given by the formula C = An / (n + 2), determine a suitable dose for a child of 6 years.

Solution:

C = An / (n + 2) ...(1),   A = 0.8, n = 6, C = ?     Substituting for A and N in (1) gives C = 0.6. So the child's dose is 0.6 grams.
