Problem Solving

Example 46

The formula for the temperature in a certain mine shaft is

T = (D / 50) + 10

where T stands for the temperature in degrees Celsius and D stands for the depth, in metres, below the surface.

a.  Make D the subject of the formula.
b.  Find the value of D when T = 40.
Solution:

Multiply both sides by 50, then use the Distributive Law, subtract 500 from both sides and rearrange to find D = 50 (T - 10).

When T = 40, D = 1500.  So, the depth is 1500 m.
