Square Roots

To find the square root of a given number is to think of what number when multiplied by itself is equal to the given number.

For example, to find the square root of 4, we have to think of a number that when multiplied by itself gives 4.  The number is 2 since 2 × 2 = 4.

Note the symbol for the square root of a number

The square root of 4, 1, 0, 9 and 100 is 2, 1, 0, 3 and 10 respectively

So the square root of a given number is the positive number whose square produces the given number. 

The square root of 9 is +3.


Example 8

What number do you have to square to get each of the following numbers?
a.  144
b.  400

Solution:

12 squared is 144 and 20 squared is 400


Example 9

Find the square root of 169 and 225

Solution:

The square root of 169 and 225 is 13 and 15 respectively
