Project 12.1 A Rectangular Paddock
Farmer Fred Farnham owns a rectangular paddock that is 300 m by 450 m.
1. Draw a diagram of this paddock.
2. Fred needs to put a wire fence around the paddock in order to
stop his flock of sheep from escaping the paddock. How much wire does
Fred need if he plans to design a fence made of 7 strands of fencing wire?
3. To ensure that the fence is stable, Fred needs to place a corner
post at each corner of the paddock and a standard fence post at 15 m
intervals between the corner posts.
a. How many corner posts will Fred buy?
b. How many standard fence posts will Fred buy?
4. Tie wire is needed to connect the fencing wire to each
post. How much tie wire will Fred buy if 32 cm of tie wire is needed
to connect each strand of fencing to a corner post, and 24 cm of tie wire is
needed to connect to a standard fence post?
5. Find the total cost of the fence if the corner posts cost $16
each, the standard fence posts cost $12 each, the fencing wire costs $1.20
per metre and the tie wire costs 75 cents per metre.
