Working with Metric Units of Length

In order to add (or subtract) the lengths, it is essential that all lengths be expressed in the same units.

Example 6

Evaluate 45 mm + 6.4 cm.

Solution:

Convert 6.4 cm into mm.

Note:

The answer of 109 mm can be converted into centimetres.

Thus 45 mm + 6.4 cm = 10.9 cm

Example 7

The railway station is 1.2 km away from Jacob's home and 895 m away from Sabina's home.  Who lives closer to the station and by how much?

Solution:

Convert 1.2 km into m.

So, Sabina lives closer to the station by 305 m.
