Year 9 Interactive Maths - Second Edition


Perpendicular from a Point on to a Line

Given a line AB and a point P that is not on the line, we adopt the following steps to 'drop' a perpendicular from P onto AB:

Step 1


Draw an arc with centre P and with a radius long enough to cut the line AB at two points, X and Y.

Step 2

Draw an arc centred at X using a radius that is more than half of the length of the interval XY.

Step 3

Using the same radius, draw an arc centred at Y to cut the arc drawn in Step 2, at Z.

Step 4

Join PZ.
