Addition

Adding two (or more) numbers means to find their sum (or total).  The symbol used for addition is '+'.

For example, 4 + 6 = 10

This is read as four plus six is equal to ten or simply, four plus six is ten.

Example 4

Find the sum of 8 and 7.

Solution:

8 + 7 = 15

Addition of Large Numbers

To add large numbers, list them in columns and then add only those digits that have the same place value, as illustrated below.

Example 5

Find the sum of 4078, 89, 386 and 9347.

Solution:

When adding large numbers, remember to write the numbers so that the same place values are in the same column.

Note:
  • 8 + 9 + 6 + 7 = 30
  • The sum of the digits in the first column is 30.  So, we place 0 in the units place and carry 3 to the tens place.
  • Similarly, the sum of the digits in the second column is 30.  So, we place 0 in the tens place and carry 3 to the hundreds place.

Setting Out:

Often, we set out the solution as follows.

This solution shows the numbers carried to the next place value.
