Powers

We know that:
10 squared is 100

10 is the base, 2 is the index or power and 100 is the basic numeral

That is:
The index (or power), base and basic numeral are highlighted

10 squared in expanded form is 10 × 10
So, 10 squared has 2 of the same factors.

This suggests that the power (or index) tells us how many times the base has to be multiplied by itself.

For example:
The power or index is 3

73 is read as '7 to the power of 3' or '7 to the 3' or 7 cubed'.

Example 12

Write 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 in index form.

Solution:

Index form

Expanded Form

If a number is written as a product of factors, then it is said to be in expanded form.

Expanded form

Example 13

Write 36 in expanded form.

Solution:

Expanded form

Example 14

Evaluate 23.

Solution:

2 cubed is 8 using the associative law for multiplication

Short way:

2 cubed is 8

Example 15

Evaluate 54.

Solution:

5 to the power 4 is 625 using the associative law for multiplication

Alternative way:

5 to the power 4 is 625

Example 16

Evaluate 7 cubed less 3 to the power 5

Solution:

7 cubed less 3 to the power 5 is 100

Example 17

Evaluate 6 squared less 1 to the power 7 plus 4 cubed

Solution:

6 squared less 1 to the power 7 plus 4 cubed is 99
