Powers

We know that:
10 squared is 100

10 is the base, 2 is the index or power and 100 is the basic numeral

That is:
The index (or power), base and basic numeral are highlighted

10 squared in expanded form is 10 × 10
So, 10 squared has 2 of the same factors.

This suggests that the power (or index) tells us how many times the base has to be multiplied by itself.

For example:
The power or index is 3

73 is read as '7 to the power of 3' or '7 to the 3' or 7 cubed'.
