Powers of 10

Look at this pattern:
The power of 10 matches the number of zeros in the basic numeral.

From this we can infer that:

10 to the power of 8 has 8 zeros when written as a basic numeral.


Example 21

Write 5 × 10 squared as a basic number.

Solution:

5 × 10 squared is 500


Example 22

Evaluate 8 × 10 cubed

Solution:

8 × 10 cubed is 8000


Example 23

Express 5000 as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

Solution:

5000 is 5 × 10 cubed
