Equations

A number sentence that has a left-hand side, a right-hand side and an equal sign is called an equation.

We know that:

6 + 9 = 15 and 3 × 5 = 15

Clearly, both 6 + 9 and 3 × 5 have the same value of 15.  So we can express this as the following equation:

6 + 9 = 3 × 5

Similarly, a number sentence such as
16/2 = 15 - 7
is an equation because:

The left-hand side and the right-hand side both equal 8.

Note:

The left-hand side equals the right-hand side in the above number sentence.

Using Pronumerals in Equations

Clearly, the number sentence
5 + 10 = 15
is an equation.

If the value of the pronumeral x is 5, then x can take the place of 5; and we can write this equation as

x + 10 = 15

This is an equation containing the pronumeral x.  The value of the pronumeral x is 5.

Example 1

Describe each of the following equations in words:

x + 4 = 10, x - 3 = 12, 8x = 40, x/3 = 7

Solution:

Four added to x is equal to ten.

Three subtracted from x is equal to twelve.

Eight multiplied by x is equal to forty.

x divided by 3 is equal to seven.

Example 2

Write an equation to represent each of the following statements:
a.  When I add 6 to a number, the answer is 15.
b.  When I subtract 5 from a number, the answer is 18.
c.  When I multiply a number by 4, the answer is 20.
d.  When I divide a number by 3, the answer is 9.
