Comparison of Lengths

In order to compare lengths (or distances), it is essential that we express them in the same units.

Example 5

For each of the following pairs of lengths, which is greater?

a.  7.4 cm and 76 mm
b.  3.8 m and 370 cm
c.  840 m and 1 km
d.  5 km and 4985 m

Solution:

a.  To compare 7.4 cm and 76 mm, convert 7.4 cm to mm.

76 mm > 7.4 cm

b.  To compare 3.8 m and 370 cm, convert 3.8 m to cm.

3.8 m > 370 cm

c.  To compare 840 m and 1 km, convert 1 km to m.

1 km > 840 m

d.  To compare 5 km and 4985 m, convert 5 km to m.
