Working with Metric Units of Length

In order to add (or subtract) lengths, it is essential that all lengths be expressed in the same units.

Example 7

Evaluate 67 mm + 8.9 cm.

Solution:

Convert 8.9 cm into mm.

8.9 cm = 89 mm

67 mm + 8.9 cm = 156 mm

Note:

The answer of 156 mm can be converted into centimetres.

156 mm = 15.6 cm

Thus 67 mm + 8.9 cm = 15.6 cm

Example 8

The local library is 1.4 km away from Farrel's home and 987 m away from Kelly's home.  Who lives closer to the local library and by how much?

Solution:

Convert 1.4 km into m.

1.4 km = 1400 m

So, Kelly lives closer to the library by 413 m.
