Equations Involving Multiplication

Remember that we can divide both sides of the equation by the same number.

Example 5

Solve 7x = 14 for x.

Solution:

Note:

The balance is preserved when the same number divides both sides of an equation.

Problem Solving

Example 6

If twice a number is equal to 12, find the number.

Solution:

Let x be the number.

Twice x is 2x, which is given as 12.

So, the number is 6.
